Filling Their Rice Bowls

Ethos:
I created this piece to stimulate cross cultural dialogue between Chinese and internationals on a university campus.  Chinese students had voiced that chinese culture was not valued. I created this work to show them that many lamented the loss of their culture due to their country’s race to globalize.  “filling your rice bowl” is a chinese idiom for having enough, a full belly.  This piece questions what is lost in effort to obtain not just a full rice bowl but an overflowing one.
